Tulsa County was designated as an Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) by the federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS). UASIs are funded to meet the planning, organization, equipment, and training needs of high-threat, high-density urban areas and are designed to build a greater and sustainable capacity to prevent, protect against, respond to and recover from disasters. The DHS has identified 64 UASIs nationwide. Two of those are in Oklahoma.

Through the UASI Tulsa County jurisdictions have received $1.7 million to strengthen their ability to prevent and respond to potential terrorist attacks and natural disasters. A Tulsa UASI Working Group has been formed to approve a long-range strategy for improving homeland security and to approve projects for funding.
INCOG administers the federal grant funds, coordinates meetings for the UASI, and places all orders for equipment and supplies needed for approved projects. |
