Homeland Security

In 2010 Tulsa County was designated as an Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) by the federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS). UASIs are funded to meet the planning, organization, equipment, and training needs of high-threat, high-density urban areas and are designed to build a greater and sustainable capacity to prevent, protect against, respond to and recover from disasters.

Through the UASI Tulsa County jurisdictions received about $3.4 million to strengthen their ability to prevent and respond to potential terrorist attacks and natural disasters. Although UASI grant funds are no longer available, the Homeland Security Region 7 Advisory Council meets semi-annually to provide input and guidance to the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security. In addition, a Tulsa Information Sharing Committee continues to meet to share information relevant to man-made and natural disasters.

INCOG administered the federal grant funds, coordinated meetings for the UASI, and placed all orders for equipment and supplies needed for approved projects.
